ArabSat meets this weekend
Arabsat’s signatory members have their annual conflab in Bahrain Oct 28-29.
The Bahrain meeting is more than just another gathering of Arabsat’s shareholders, important though that is. The Bahrain meeting will be chaired by Saudi Arabia’s communications and transportation Minister, Yusuf Khashegji. CEO Khalid Balkhior said he expects the agenda to include expansion based on Arabsat’s plans for the fifth generation of Badr satellites now under construction.
Also under discussion will be the recent problems to Arabsat 2B which drifted slightly out of orbit on September 26. The problem affected all of its transmissions from its 30.5 deg East orbital position. The satellite was brought back to its correct orbit some hours after the incident. Arabsat 2B is to be replaced with Arabsat 5A craft, ordered in June from Astrium/Alenia, and due for launch later in the 2009-2010 time frame.
Representatives from Bahrain, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Syria, Sudan, Libya and the Lebanon are expected.
